The Treasurer's Duties

Funding Warrants

By law, costs incurred by the County are paid by "drawing a warrant" (issuing a check) on the County Treasurer.

General warrant lists are prepared twice each week by the Salt Lake County Auditor's Office. These lists represent "accounts payable", and are broken down by county fund.

The Treasurer reduces the investment portfolio to pay these expenses if sufficient daily collections are not available to cover the warrants.

Warrant lists may be as small as $100,000 or as large as $10 million, with an average of $2 million.

Payroll warrants are funded semi-monthly for approximately 4,400 employees. Each payroll issued totals about $7.5 million.

Presently $1.9 million of the payroll is paid by county warrants issued to employees, while $3.1 million represents direct deposits made to individual employee accounts.

The balance, ($2.5 million) consists of tax withholdings sent to the federal and state governments and retirement and other benefits paid to providers.
